CCNA July 27, 2010 Abror In my opinion, Todd Lammle's book is the best for CCNA candidates. Thats why i will strongly recommend it.
Very comprehensive and fluid learning guide July 7, 2010 Matt Ross 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Todd does a fantastic job organizing the content in such a way that you flow from one topic to another. This creates a symbiotic learning experience between the current objective you are studying and the previous one. Use the book to guide you through simulations, or create the same simulations he describes and inject your own issues to fully understand the material presented. The chapters on switches, spanning tree, BPDU, and port security were very complete and personally helpful to me. Todd explained and demystified many questions I had about configuration, testing, and verification of router and switch configurations. Definitely use this book to prepare for your exam or use the book to answer seemingly esoteric topics that are laid out for you in a very simplistic and easy to understand format.
Perfect July 6, 2010 CP 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It doesn't get much better than this. I used this book to pass ICND2 after reading Lammle's CCENT for ICND1 - although you CAN use this book for both exams. Todd's writing style is amazing compared to most others (especially Odem - jeez he's hard to digest).
Great Book. July 4, 2010 CDM 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
He does a great job with what he covers. It compliments the Cisco Explorations material well. He does an excellent job of teaching easy methods to subnet and how to determine wildcard masks. Much better than it is explained in the CISCO Explorations material. However it is missing some very important information that is covered more thoroughly in CISCO Explorations. I would highly recommend this to use along with CISCO Explorations. They make an excellent combination in studying for the CCNA.
Still a perfect book for all your CCNA needs! June 7, 2010 Orange Crush (Denver, CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book a few years ago when I was planning to take the CCNA exam but I was busy in a demanding job and didn't get around to the test till recently. When I went back to look at my materials I had also purchased the official Cisco training manuals. After looking at reviews here I was slightly concerned that the exam had changed in the last few years and didn't see a lot of current reviews. Thus, I started with the Cisco books and nearly fell asleep 3 times the first day I was going through them! I picked this book back up just to check out another style.
Well, as many others have said, this book was just what I needed! It is clearly written, provides many examples, and has more of a conversational feel to it rather than the very technical and stiff style of writing. This book still brings the goods necessary to pass the test in 2010! There wasn't much that was on the actual exam that wasn't covered here. Is the book perfect? No, but people who say that this is not an adequate book to study for the exam really must not have read it and given it a real try. If you need prepare for the exam and need materials that are clear and concise, go with this book.
I didn't see it mentioned in reviews elsewhere, but the author actually has a website of his own and keeps an active forum there for people to ask questions or for tips on things they are struggling with. I didn't look at the forum till near the end of my study, but it was great to see the author himself, Todd Lammle, replying to questions as well as many others invested in the open forum.
I scored a 974 out of 1000 on the composite 640-802 exam using just this book and RouterSim's Network Visualizer. This was my primary studying source and Network Visualizer was my primary practicing source. Btw, RouterSim's simulator product is actually created with this book in mind - each chapter in the book corresponds to a set of labs that lets you go do things like set up EIGRP from scratch, or create VLANs, troubleshoot frame-relay connections, etc...
In summary, don't have any doubts, Todd Lammle knows his stuff and conveys it in a very accesible way that works just as well for the test now as it did when the book was first published! I highly recommend this book. Good luck!
