5 out of 5 stars Can't beat this dongle!   September 5, 2010
The Headhunter (Lebanon, NJ United States)
Bought the refurb'd version for about $24. It just works. Installation on Win XP is a snap. But follow advice of others who have installed this UBS LAN dongle. DO NOT run the LinkSys CD first... Here's what worked for me:

1. Check your wireless router settings via your browser. If you have "broadcast" turned OFF to protect your router from prying eyes, temporarily turn it ON.

2. Plug your new LinkSys dongle into a USB port on the PC you want to connect to your LAN. I used a USB port on the back of my Dell because I know those are powered. I'm not sure whether the dongle requires power or not, but took no chances.

3. Win XP will recognize the device and provides steps to install it. It asks for software. Now put the LinkSys CD into the drive. Tell Win XP to search the CD (not the Web) for the drivers. Win XP will automatically install drivers from the CD.

4. Upon successful driver installation, Win XP will show you the available wireless networks you can connect to. Make sure your network is listed. (My pc showed my neighbor's, too!) Enter the password/key information it asks you for.

Your pc should connect to your LAN. Worked flawlessly for me.

5. If you had your router set to DO NOT BROADCAST, go back now and turn broadcast OFF again to protect your LAN. (Win XP could not find my router until I turned broadcast on temporarily to complete the setup.)

I'm buying more of these so I can eliminate the cables to my pc's. Can't beat the price!

(My router is a LinkSys/Cisco WRT160N. Your router may work a bit differently. Good luck.)

1 out of 5 stars Junk   August 18, 2010

This refurbished Cisco-Linksys adapter is a piece of junk. The signal reception is beyond poor (2 bars or less when other machines near it have 5 full bars). It dropped connection every few minutes. I use VPN to connect to work and it would drop every 5 minutes. I returned it in less than a week.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to set up, works great   August 15, 2010
Adam Lasnik (San Francisco, CA USA and http://www.bladam.com/)
Even though the unit only sees my roommate's wireless as "good," I'm getting far-better-than-good throughput with this. It was easy to set up, and works reliably and without hassle.

my husband swore up and down that we needed this so we bought it together with the cisco valet and the cisco valet is really all we needed. but it all worked so it's all good.
