best wireless "card" ever September 1, 2010 Acinamoras I just got this in the mail. It took 20 minutes for me to install. It wouldn't take near that long had my computer's cd reading abilities not become compromised a while back. However, a single search on the Hawking website gave a downloadable copy of the cd that works the exact same as the provided cd. Great support. So for ease of instillation, this gets 5 stars. Then for its use, all I had to do was select the internet I wanted and connect. 5 stars for ease of use. Now on to the internet itself...
This product is brilliant. I'm not sure how far away from the modem I am but the signal I'm getting now is giving my laptop faster internet than it has ever seen. Before, my signal would never give me anything higher than 11 Mbps and often sat at 1 or wasn't there at all. Now I have a full signal with great speed. I notice my neighbor's signals are also showing up with around 60% strength. All the houses here sit on over an acre of land and I'm getting good signals from two houses away. That should tell you something about this things range ability.
So final line: this is worth every penny. I now have internet that works with amazing speed and is reliable. I would recommend this product to anyone who has bad signal problems.
Did not work as advertised August 31, 2010 J. Roberts (St. George, UT, US) I tried this product but did not help my signal. Sent it back for refund.
Hawking Signal Booster August 16, 2010 Lucy W. Akers (Maricopa AZ) Using this booster in the window of my rv, I was able to receive a signal over the top of a large rv parked next to me even tho we were at the very edge of the reception area. Had I not received a better signal this way, I would have tried putting the booster outside on the roof. I don't know how it does in rain!
Other models are available at [...] but I bought at amazon.com because of expedited shipping.
Better than most August 11, 2010 A. Owen This adapter is better than most over-hyped high-range antennas but it still is a must to have it placed outside for it to be 100% effective. I could not get a good signal indoors, it was even weak through a window. I have since purchased an Alfa 1W 9db gain omni-directional antenna and adapter kit and had better results. The outside of the box makes it seem like there are two setup discs, one for mac, and one for windows, but there is only one disc with the software for both. The dish was very small and seemed cheaply made. If this bad boy was waterproof it would be great but since it is not it is useless for my application. My access point was about a half mile away with minor obstructions such as flags and power poles.
A Good Product, But Not For 64-bit Systems May 17, 2010 Alan Darlington (Portland, OR) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The software was easy to install. However the documentation is sadly out-of-date and does not show the current windows. I could not get the unit to find any networks at all, and all the frames that it received had CRC errors, so I suspected a hardware problem and returned the unit to Hawking, getting a new unit in return.
The new unit exhibited the same problems, so I began to suspect software / configuration problems, rather than bad hardware. This led me to boot into Windows Vista 32-bit (I regularly use Vista 64-bit), where I installed the software. I now was able to see a large number of networks (far more than I ever saw with my Intel WiFi unit), and after some fiddling I was able to reliably connect to my apartment complex's WiFi.
The Hawking unit works well and I am happy with it, but the software is complex, and the documentation is very poor. Novice users may have problems. For more sophisticated users, I have no hesitations about recommending this unit.
But don't get it if you only have 64-bit versions of Windows 7 or Vista. (Although Hawking has promised to look into this bug for me - they may eventually fix it.)
