Works with Verizon DSL (NJ) and with new and old Macs - up to a point September 8, 2010 Tom Swift
We were having intermittent drop-out troubles with our 6 yr old Verizon-provided Westell DSL modem, so it was time for a replacement. I picked the Actiontec GT724WGR because of it's 4-port ethernet outputs, it being wireless, and ActionTec's promise of compatibility with all service providers. Amazon did their usual quick delivery, thank you.
Set up of the ActionTec was very easy, and we had no problems making the connection between Verizon and the new unit using an ethernet-connected 600 MHZ imac [OS 10.3.9] to access the unit's internal controls via Firefox browser. The imac hit the internet w/o problems.
Some fiddling with a 2 year old MacBook [running OS 10.6.4] and it, too, hit the internet.
We have an ancient but still working 233 Mhz imac [OS 9.2.2] in my basement workshop which I hooked up via a previously run ethernet cable to the ActionTec. The old girl is much too slow for modern internet browsing, but perfect for e-mail and streaming radio. It connected solidly and within minutes. Can you tell we are a mac household yet? :-)
My daughter came home, took out her ipod Touch, and hit the web immediately after logging in the network password.
But of course Murphy's Law prevails:
Unfortunate condition #1 - a second laptop, a pre-Intel iBook [OS 10.4.11], never was able to access the ActionTec wirelessly even after hours of tweaking. As of this writing it's wirelessly connected to the home network via the Apple Airport Extreme (set to bridging mode) connected to one ethernet port on the ActionTec. Further investigation is necessary. I can't blame ActionTec (yet).
Unfortunate condition #2 - as it has been mentioned by other people, this model ActionTec cannot support networking of any USB printer because there is no USB port. For whatever reason, the engineers decided not to include one. I plugged our USB laser printer back into the Airport Extreme's USB port to allow printing via our network. Guess there's 2 reasons to keep the Airport. (Network-capable printers reportedly work well.)
Out of 6 hopeful outcomes - 4 mac machines were set-up successfully, 2 devices turned up to be problematic and required a workaround. These days, dealing with modern complex consumer technology from different companies, I think that's pretty good!
Definitely recommend the ActionTec. I'll return with a long-term review in the future.
Cheers.....
Good product, lackluster support September 6, 2010 jimmyv I was able to set this product up relatively quickly, though had some trouble setting up my network to work with both Macs and PCs. It turns out that the device doesn't support named computers well, so you have to work with IP addresses. To make a long story short, the support team didn't have any clue as to what I was trying to do and pushed me off to my ISP (who knew a little more, at least to get me looking in the correct direction). Actiontec's support team didn't even try to answer the question. I had to find an online manual to figure out the issue. Regardless, the product has been running for a few months with only one drop (and I believe it was my ISP). Just don't call support.
Crap shoot on quality-would not recommend September 6, 2010 Michael Nichols I purchased the Actiontec GT724WGR ADSL modem to replace our universally crummy 2Wire modem supplied by AT&T. The user ratings were very positive when used with AT&T DSL service, so we thought we would go with it hoping it would be better than the 2Wire. As advertised, the modem setup was extraordinarily simple and fast. We were off to the races! We reconfigured our many wireless devices to work with the Actiontec very easily. For one week, we were very happy with our purchase.
Now the other shoe dropped. The modem failed. Per the self help instructions on the Actiontec web site we used the reset button to set the modem back to original settings. Once reconfigured, the modem worked for exactly 60 seconds before it failed again. Unfortunately, the reset button no longer functioned. Combing the Actiontec web site for technical support, I found no telephone numbers, only an e-mail address. Surprisingly, my detailed e-mail was answered the following morning with an apology and instructions to call a number for further support. I dutifully called the number as instructed and the technician also determined that we had a defective modem and we would have to have it replaced. I was sent to an "escalation" number to expedite our replacement unit. The last technician informed me that "it was not their problem, call Amazon". Really? That's your idea of customer experience Actiontec?
Fortunately for us, Amazon DOES know what superior customer service is and over-nighted a replacement modem to us (at this point, we had been down for 5 days and my wife's business crippled). We received the replacement Actiontec modem as promised the next day. The modem configured just as easily as the first time, however it failed in exactly the same way as the first modem and would not reset at all.
Needless to say, we contacted Amazon again and they happily took the modem back and completely refunded our money. We ordered another crummy 2Wire modem from AT&T and, although it may not be the greatest, it has been working for two weeks without a failure. Actiontec cannot make that statement in this case.
Beyond easy, great quality September 5, 2010 B. Howering After reading all the reviews for this item, I decided to go with this modem. It came way before I expected it, first of all. Was not prepared to install it right away. I did read the literature, though, and decided to give it a try. Being a Verizon customer, I expected to have to leave my old modem unhooked for a while before I connected the Actiontec. However, I decided to go ahead and try it and if it had to wait, then I would do that. Unplugged the old one, plugged in the new...Windows 7 took over and BAM! - I was online. It took less than a minute. I kept thinking there must be something more to do...after all, all I did was plug it in, write down my password, and open my homepage. Nope, not another thing - I was checking out all my sites, and at speeds well above what my old Verizon (Westell) modem would do. Also have not had a single disconnect since switching over. I am extremely impressed with the entire experience.
Simple mind...... September 4, 2010 J.D. ....simply amazed. Spent a couple days researching all the different options out there; Linksys, Netgear, Speedstream...blah, blah, blah. I had purchased a new iMac and needed to replace my old (and very tired) Linksys router and Speedstream modem. I wanted an all in one unit, and I finally found this Actiontec. I had never heard of it, however I'm not too computer savvy so it was no surprise. The ratings on Amazon as well as several other sites were consistently rather high for this unit. No wonder!! I set everything up at once: iMac & Modem/router. I thought I would have to spend a ton of time setting up the router and all that jazz, but for this simpleton it was a breeze!! I plugged everything in just like the instructions said (I like picture instructions myself) and this little modem hopped right to work!!! Once the iMac came on line (only a minute or two) the modem was already "finding" itself and it only took another 5 or 6 minutes to get the wireless aspect running. Now, I have a secure wireless network in my home that the iPod, Droid, Blu-Ray player and Wii device can all access very easily. I have yet to stream movies to the Blu Ray, but the YouTube feature works just fine! No speed problems that I've seen so far. The iPod loves it....the Droid loves it....the Wii has yet to try it (wife and I don't play it too much).
This is not a very technical review, then again I'm not a very technical guy. I'm just sayin' this is a rather nice unit that is compact, quiet, and very, VERY easy to use for a simple guy like me.
